Chapter 18, All I Want to Give: Sean

I am too excited to snooze my alarm when it rings. Upon the first chime, I shut it and jump out of bed, feeling energized as I head into the shower. Today, I get to see Hailey and celebrate her getting a new job. God, I didn’t think it was going to happen so soon, but there she goes, fascinating me again. Hailey is bright, hardworking and simply awesome, and I am certain that the new company will realize how lucky they are to have her in no time.

After drying myself off, I want to look good for our date. I shuffle in front of my wardrobe, hesitant about what to wear. I don’t touch the items that Josephine had bought for me on her company’s buck for our forced dates. I don’t even want to. The feel of those clothes on my body makes my skin crawl, knowing that they represent nothing but the uniform of the role I play for her and deep down, all the lies. My stomach forms a knot to the thought of that.

I settle on a nice button-down shirt in black. My mother had given me that as a gift when I first started Prodigy, and it’s the perfect fabric and cut for today. I pair it with a nice pair of jeans and head out of my room toward the kitchen.

June greets me in the hallways with a brief meow before running along ahead of me, tail up, and bolting for her plate. After I put some breakfast out for her, I remember to text Mrs. Ritter from next door to come feed her through the day, and maybe play a little.

On the counter, I had left out the ingredients of what I want to cook for Hailey, packed and ready. I grab the backpack I had also prepared last night, kiss the top of June’s furry head, and go on my way. As soon as I arrive at Hailey’s building, I set my phone to silent mode, hoping that Josephine understood the message the last time. I am out of town and this is all she needs to know. If something comes up with work, they can email me about it and I will check it when I can.

Now it’s time to celebrate Hailey’s success. I knock on her door and when she opens, she is a vision from heaven. I don’t think about how the light from the balcony behind her casts this angelic aura all around her, rendering her hair a golden halo that surrounds her smiling face. I do think about that shiny peach lip gloss adorning her smile and wonder if tastes as good as it looks. My eyes catch that light in her hazel eyes, a sparkle of happiness to see me. And my gaze descends to her button-up shirt dress, a shade of yellow that better explains the brightness in her eyes.

She looks at the two shopping totes in my hands and shakes her head, stepping back for me to enter.
